JOB TITLE: Reading Specialist

REPORTS TO: Building Administrator

 

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

 

The reading specialists’ role is to work one-on-one or in small-group settings with students who have complex reading needs. Reading specialists coach teachers on methods of teaching reading and on assessing and improving reading curricula. Reading specialists share responsibility with teachers for

assessing students’ reading abilities, identifying deficiencies, and creating intervention plans for students selected for additional reading instruction.

 

Reading specialists’ will promote the NLCS vision for reading instruction and support teachers in the implementation of the NLCS adopted reading curriculum. With a primary focus on instruction and assessment, they will work closely with teachers, administrators, and families to track student progress, set goals, and provide updates on student achievement.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Building Instructional Capacity

  • Develop and enhance knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices, e.g. modeling, dialogical coaching, researching, training, co-teaching, observation and feedback
  • Guide teachers & instructional leaders in using data to inform instructional practice
  • Support teachers in implementing and differentiating curriculum to meet students’ needs

Planning & Professional Learning

  • Deliver ongoing professional learning opportunitites
  • Organize and disseminate data

Student Support

  • Support PLC teams, the MTSS team and the RTI framework at the building-level
  • Provide one-on-one and small group instruction to support students with complex reading needs
  • Assess and progress monitor students’ growth

 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED

Educational Requirements

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Reading specialist license and/or master’s degree in education preferred.

 

 

 

Skills

& Knowledge

Strong knowledge of the five components of reading instruction and the instructional strategies necessary to apply it. Excellent oral & written communication skills.

Demonstrated teaching, data management, technology and leadership skills. A strategic and critical thinker with a proven ability to respond to individual student needs. Knowledge of instructional design & highly interactive or innovative instructional methods. Deep knowledge of instructional best practices. Knowledge of Indiana academic standards.

 

 

Experience

At least 2 years of teaching, and evidence of teacher-leadership experience. Experience in effective instructional design and professional development. The advanced ability to set and meet goals and priorities, and work with colleagues to implement and drive results-oriented systems.
